Key part of your gaming strategy is how you distribute limited resources.
In Pokemon Go your resources are:
1) time (most people can't play 24/7 every day);
2) candy; and
Candy is pokemon-specific. If you have Drowzee candy, for example, it contributes to your ability to evolve Drowzee into Hypno. If you are wise with candy, you will save lots of candy until you're in a position to evolve 60 pokemons or so all at once. At this point you launch a lucky egg and start your mass evolutions - this way you will get double XP and will be able to progress to the next level more quickly.
Stardust is a universal resource, you can use it to power up any pokemon you like. It's better to save stardust until you can play, and win, in gyms. At that point you are in a better position to judge which pokemons need your stardust the most.
